Cliffs, 250 benches, whales and the big wide ocean
My second stop in South Africa was Hermanus. A small town south of Cape Town. It’s located on a small land strip between the mountainside and the big wide ocean. Although it’s a very small town, you won’t get bored there. There are many beautiful hiking trails, vineyards on the other side of the mountain and a beautiful path along the cliffs.
Normally Hermanus is famous for its whales on the coast. Unfortunately the water was too warm this year. So there were no whales for me 😦
But it didn’t matter that I couldn’t see any whales, because the most impressive thing about Hermanus for me was the cliff path. It’s about 12 km long and leads you along the ocean, through small bays to a giant beach. Along this path are over 250 benches, and you can sit on each of them for hours. It was so impressing to sit there and just watch the giant ocean with its big waves crashing on the cliffs. On every new bench you’ll get another fantastic view on the majestic ocean. You feel so small and it’s totally mind blowing. I had tears in my eyes while I was sitting there. It even made me think: “I could stay here forever”.
When you’re back from your trip you can sit and relax in one of the cute little cafes or restaurants in Hermanus. There are even some small shops if you need to do a little shopping 😉
And if you can’t see any whales in the water, at least you can see this metallic guy in the city 😀
But nonetheless Hermanus is worth a trip. The cliff path is so beautiful and mind-blowing. The ocean appears so majestic. You can just watch it and dream.
